The museum was opened at Nishinomiyahama in May 1999. The building, designed by architect Tadao Ando, fashioned the exterior to resemble the sail of a yacht. It has a collection of 5000 shell specimens from 2000 species. Exciting displays allow visitors to pick up the shells to admire their beauty and hear the sounds they produce. The adventurer Kenichi Horie?fs Mermaid IV is displayed in its courtyard. Nishinomiya Shell Museum
